WHY DIDN’T GST CERVANTES ACT WHEN SHE LEARNED ABOUT IAM MEMBERS DUES THEFT BY SISTER AND OTHERS IN LL2198?
In late 2017, General Secretary Treasurer (GST) Cervantes was informed about the theft of IAM Members’ dues money in Local Lodge 2198 by Transportation Department representatives. It wasn’t until July, 2018 that Local Lodge 2198 was placed under supervision. GST Cervantes claims she “recused” herself from the matter due to her familial connection. There is NO formal documentary evidence of an attempted “recusal”, and there is no basis or process for “recusal” under the IAM Constitution. The question remains, why did Dora, and others on the Executive Council, allow the theft IAM Members’ dues dollars for eight months AFTER THEY KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON?
The fact is, Dora was negligent in her duty as IAM GST. As soon as she was made aware of the theft of IAM Members’ dues money, she, along with the entire Executive Council, should have immediately placed LL2198 under supervision and launched a comprehensive investigation. Dora refused to live up to her oath as IAM GST. She should resign, not seek reelection. If not for the action taken by the Transportation Department, the embezzlement of IAM Members’ dues dollars would likely still be occurring.
The IAM has admitted publicly that the Department of Labor (DOL) is still investigating our union for what occurred at LL2198. IAM members deserve answers to what and who is being investigated. It is this type of lack of transparency that gives the entire Labor Movement a black eye. I pledge that on Day One, I will find out the answers to these critical questions and demand that IAM Members be informed regarding what OUR union is doing.
I am truly disheartened there are members of the current Executive Council who blindly and explicitly support Dora, knowing full well that IAM Members were defrauded in Dora’s home local and she did absolutely nothing about it. Conduct like this causes IAM Members to lose faith in the leadership of our great union. IAM Members deserve so much better.
I ask that IAM Members stand with me to bring the much needed change that our union needs:
*Oppose this conduct and change how the IAM operates.
*Restore integrity to the IAM GST’s Office and create transparency
*Give IAM members will have a real voice in the GST’s Office and on the IAM Executive Council.
